Those who have purchased the Power Pressure Cooker XL are being warned that the device may cause serious injuries. Some of the devices have malfunctioned in a way that sent the lid, which is supposed to stay tightly latched on during cooking, flying off of the unit. Hot liquid and steam are then violently ejected, and they can instantly harm anyone near the device when they make direct contact with the skin.
This issue has been reported in a number of different states. Some people have suffered second-degree burns, while others have suffered more serious third-degree burns.
The device is made by a company called TriStar Products, Inc. It has been sold on TV, and it can also be purchased at major stores like Wal-Mart, Target or Bed Bath & Beyond.
Promotional material for the pressure cooker suggests that it’s not only hard for the lid to come off on its own but that it’s impossible for people to take it off too early. This safeguard was designed so that the pressure would dissipate before removal of the lid, keeping people safe.
However, in defective units, exactly the opposite seems to be happening. One woman who was injured said that she wasn’t even trying to take the lid off herself, but it just flew off without any type of warning signs. She was standing close enough that the super-heated contents burned her torso significantly.
