Irvine police are investigating the heartbreaking death of a toddler killed earlier this week by an Amazon delivery van inside an apartment complex. According to news reports, the Amazon van struck a 23-month-old girl playing in the driveway of her family's garage. Police told media outlets a third-party contractor operates the van and that alcohol and drugs “do not appear to be a factor.”
GBW expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family and the Irvine community, shocked and saddened by this sudden tragedy. Our litigation team is closely monitoring the situation. Amazon Delivery vans have had a history of problems. In fact, some of those vans are currently under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Did you know that there has been a recall of nearly 50 thousand Mercedes-Benz Sprinters (often used as Amazon delivery vans) in January of this year? Various outlets reported that NHTSA looked into several incidents involving complaints of delivery vans with automatic shifting features rolling away while in the park, using the Auto-P function. Multiple crashes or fires have been reported as a result of these incidents.
GBW is currently handling a case involving an Amazon delivery vehicle (that is subject of the NHSTA recall) that due to the defects in the vehicle caused serious injuries.
