To claim success in so many challenges in life, you must have determination and drive. Perhaps no legal professionals know this truth more than the attorneys of Greene Broillet & Wheeler, LLP, who have claimed victories throughout their lives not just as personal injury lawyers but also as athletes and sports enthusiasts. Recently, the popular legal publication Attorney At Law Magazine learned about our attorneys’ passions for athletic games and competitions, and reached out to feature a few of them in a piece titled, “The Athletes of Greene Broillet & Wheeler LLP on Gaining a Competitive Edge.”
Attorney Geoffrey Wells
Geoffrey’s father was a professional baseballer who played for the Cincinnati Reds, so it makes sense that he became a huge baseball fan at a young age and signed up for Little League when he was 8. He still remembers the advice that his father gave him when he was in Little League: “You don’t ease up for anybody. You just throw the ball as hard as you can, for as long as you can.” The sage words rang true throughout his time as a pitcher, as well as throughout his legal career. As a pitcher, he also learned the importance of changing up strategies and working as a part of a cohesive team.
Attorney Scott Carr
When Scott was young, he took an interest in his grandfather’s uniquely challenging hobby of trapshooting. When he was 8 or 9, he was an All-American in the Maccabiah Games; at 17, he won a gold medal as part of the U.S. team. He qualified for the Olympic Trials but opted to not participate so he could mourn the passing of his grandfather with his family. Today, Attorney Carr says that his history of trapshooting has instilled in him a sense of respectful competitiveness that is so important when working on a case, especially one that goes to trial.
Attorney Christian Nickerson
You might not know it right away due to his professional courtroom demeanor, but Attorney Christian Nickerson is an avid hockey fan and player. At just 5 years old, he started playing ice hockey. Years later, he would score the game-winning goal in the 2003 Pennsylvania High School Hockey State Championship, serve as team captain, and receive the prestigious Bob Johnson Memorial Award from the Pittsburgh Penguins. In the article, Christian shared, “Just like in sports, we’re a team here [at Greene Broillet & Wheeler, LLP. Sports teach you not just how to win but how to lose. As trial lawyers, we deal with ups and downs and a roller coaster of emotions throughout the life of a case, and hockey taught me how to deal with those highs and lows.”
Attorney Aaron Osten
Growing up in California, Aaron would start loving the Pacific Ocean and surfing around 5 years old. He was named Surfer of the Year (1998) by his high school, competed at San Diego State University, and competed in the National Championships. Today, he continues to surf in his spare time and also teaches surfing classes for U.S. military veterans with PTSD; surfing offers an important combination of exercise, excitement, and engagement that has been proven to help overcome anxiety. Attorney Osten sees the ever-changing ocean waves similarly to the ever-changing dynamics of a jury trial, so every minute spent on the surf better prepares him for the next trial, and the other way around.
